Rules and Regulations
The Solomon Memorial Library and the Henry County Historical Group will host a Smithsonian traveling exhibit from May 1st – June 9th titled “Between Fences.” The exhibit examines how fences have shaped our lives and explores the different interpretations that fences represent. The library is sponsoring an essay/poetry contest to help us further explore the idea of fences and we are inviting your school to participate.
Each school is to choose a winner from the following divisions:
Grades 3-6 – Poetry
Grades 7-12 Poetry & Grades 7 – 12 Essay
If your schools grades are separated differently, just submit a separated entry for 6th graders in addition to your other division.
The winning essays/poems should then be forwarded to the library by April 25, 2007.

Make sure that the entries are labeled with student name and school. Please also include a contact name and number for your school. The Solomon Memorial Library will provide a certificate for each of your winners and they will compete for the overall prize to be awarded the week of May 1st.
The competition is open to students within the nine counties that comprised the original Henry County: Barbour, Coffee, Covington, Crenshaw, Dale, Geneva, Houston, Henry, & Pike. Essays should be typed, double- spaced with 1-inch margins and no longer
than three pages (excluding a title page). The essay question is: “How do we build our fences?”
Poem style is left to the creativity and discretion of the writer. The event is free of charge and is available to be booked for field trips.
