2026 HCHG Annual Meeting Highlights

The Henry County Historical Group, Inc. (HCHG) hosted its 2026 Annual Meeting on August 1 at the Great Southern Conference Center, bringing together history enthusiasts. The event featured keynote guest speaker David Duncan, President of the American Battlefield Trust. Duncan gave an overview of the American Battlefield Trust’s mission to protect and preserve battlefields from the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and the Civil War, which includes such well-known sites as Gettysburg, Antietam and Bunker Hill. Before being appointed President in October 2020, Duncan served as the Chief Development Officer for many years. In this role, his main responsibility was raising funds for the Trust.

During his talk, Duncan spoke about the remarkable and colorful life of William Calvin (W. C.) Oates, a veteran of the Battle of Gettysburg and the only Henry County resident to serve as Alabama governor. A portrait of Oates and the desk from his Abbeville law office were on display during the event. The desk and portrait were a nice added touch to Duncan’s program, which captivated the membership and left everyone delighted.

Founded in September 2003, the HCHG is dedicated to researching Henry County’s rich history and preserving its essential sites, documents, and artifacts. Our vibrant community spans from California to Maryland, connected through family roots, word of mouth, and a shared passion for regional preservation.
